Volunteer Job Descriptions

General Qualifications for all Volunteers

  1. Completion of volunteer training.
  2. Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  3. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  4. Ability to work with and without direct supervision.
  5. Attendance at volunteer meetings and trainings.
  6. Ability to take responsibility for own actions.
  7. Agreement to follow CARDV policies and procedures.

Specific Qualifications/Job Descriptions

  • Hotline Worker: Our 24-hour crisis line can be answered at the office or in your home. Resource materials are provided.
    Duties include: Providing support and information to callers, keeping appropriate records and passing information on to other staff and volunteers, and maintaining a consistent schedule with the Volunteer and Community Training Specialist.
  • Childcare Provider: As possible, we provide childcare for evening support groups and daytime respite care for parents in shelter.
    Duties include: Supervising children during meetings and activities, maintaining an atmosphere of non-violence while allowing children to express themselves and test limits, and informing staff about alleged or suspected child abuse.
  • Legal Advocate: A CARDV advocate is present at the Linn and Benton County courthouses every morning assisting survivors with the protective order process. Volunteers must have morning availability.
    Duties include: Attending hearings to provide emotional support and information to survivors, safety planning, and monitoring the way in which our legal system treats survivors through our Courtwatch Program.
  • Shelter Mentor: The shelter mentor program allows volunteers to work one-on-one with current shelter residents.
    Duties include: Providing basic advocacy for shelter residents, including empathetic listening, emotional support, resources, safety planning, and transportation. A review of your driving record through the Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
  • Administrative Support: CARDV can always use help around the office.
    Duties include: Filing, copying, organizing donations, answering the phone, etc.
  • Community Educator: CARDV is out in the community – in elementary and high schools, on college campuses, and at community agencies – staffing informational tables and giving presentations on our services as well as the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence.
    Duties include: Staffing informational tables, assisting with curriculum review, and co-facilitating presentations with staff in the community.
  • Fundraising: CARDV holds a number of fundraising events throughout the year, which rely on volunteer assistance. Additionally, one could become part of the fundraising committee formed by the Board of Directors.
    Duties include: Organizing and participating in special events, attending monthly meetings, and planning CARDV’s fundraising future.
  • Wish List Drive Organizer: A Wish List Drive is when a volunteer or group of volunteers coordinates with a local grocery store to provide shoppers with copies of CARDV’s current wish list so that interested shoppers are then able to purchase needed items for shelter residents (like toiletries, household items, etc.).
    Duties include: Organizing and planning Wish List Drive, coordinating with CARDV staff, and dropping donations off at CARDV’s Administrative Office.

All direct service positions require extra training. Any volunteer involved in direct service will be required to keep accurate statistics and communicate any pertinent information to staff. Questions or concerns should be brought to the Volunteer and Community Training Specialist, Client Services Director, or Executive Director immediately.
